Group Health Continuation Coverage Under COBRA
On April 7, 1986, a federal law, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, (commonly known as COBRA) was enacted. This law required that most employers sponsoring group health plans offer employees, former employees, and their families the opportunity for a temporary extension of health coverage (called “continuation coverage”) at group rates in certain instances where coverage under the plan would otherwise end.
Both you and your spouse should read this section carefully.
As a COBRA participant, you and/or your dependents have the same health insurance benefits as an actively employed person. You are able to add dependents during Open Enrollment and for certain life events. However, if you terminate coverage, you cannot enroll at a later date.
